This Web site is a collection of pages created to share my research and discoveries of Japanese history while studying at the University of Maryland, University College, Asia Division.  It is also intended to help others in their research of Japanese history.  The other pages in this site are accessed through links in the time line above.   Japan is an island country.  Its geographic isolation has enabled the Japanese to develop culturally in a unique way.  The large bodies of water surrounding it have protected Japan from foreign invasions for centuries.  That is not to say that there have not been any attempts at it.  This isolation enabled them to be pretty selective in what outside influences came into the country. This geographic isolation, for many centuries, allowed the Japanese to develop a culture that is uniquely Japanese.  They borrowed from many cultures over the years, but nearly everything they borrowed eventually became uniquly Japanese.   These Web pages are not intended to be inclusive of every event in Japan's history, but to provide some insight into the country's history and inspire others to learn more about Japan's fascinating and ancient history. |
